A person fell from a cliff and died on Tuesday in the Devil’s Slide area between Pacifica and Montara, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
Around 11:45 a.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the Cal Fire CZU San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit responded to reports of a person falling off a cliff at Gray Whale Cove State Beach. Specialized rescue teams arrived at the scene, but the person died, the sheriff’s office said in a statement on Facebook. Authorities closed Highway 1 for about half an hour to gain access to the scene.

Witnesses told authorities that the person may have been experiencing a medical emergency when they fell, according to the sheriff’s office. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death, the Facebook post said.
Authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the person’s identity.
The terrain of the Devil’s Slide area is made of crumbly rock and sheer cliffs. Last April, firefighters rescued a hiker from the Devil’s Slide Trail, north of Montara. And in June, a woman died after falling from a cliff near Devil’s Slide.
Gray Whale Cove State Beach is known for its whale migration. The 800-foot beach is only reachable by a steep staircase, and California State Parks warns visitors to use caution on cliff edges.
