Your Weather Planner

A nice warming trend has arrived. It’s mostly sunshine that will prevail in the region this week.

Onshore conditions will return late, but temperatures will remain above normal.

It appears that the month into the beginning of March will remain dry and warmer than average.

1. California members split on attending Trump’s State of the Union

President Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address of his second term Tuesday, and California lawmakers are split on whether they plan to attend.

Sen. Adam Schiff announced on social media he would skip the speech for the first time in his over 25 years in Congress, and that he will instead attend an alternative event branded as the “People’s State of the Union” outside the Capitol.

Other Democrats in the delegation that plan to ditch the speech include Reps. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Robert Garcia, Ami Bera and Dave Min, to name a few.

Spectrum News will air network-wide live special coverage of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Feb. 24, beginning at 8:55 p.m. E.T., followed by the Democratic response and post-address analysis.

2. LA families fear eviction under proposed HUD rule

Last week, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced a proposed rule that would bar mixed-status households from federally funded housing programs, including Section 8 vouchers and public housing.

A mixed-status household is one in which at least one family member is undocumented, even if others in the home, often children, are U.S. citizens.

For more than 14 years, Maria has raised her five children at Mar Vista Gardens, a public housing complex in Los Angeles.

Maria asked that we hide her face and use only her first name. She and her husband are undocumented, but their five children are U.S. citizens. She said she moved into public housing because it felt safe and gave her children access to better schools.

“Here it was easier for me because I wanted a safe place for my family,” she said in Spanish.

But now, that safety feels uncertain.

3. New buyer emerges for graffiti-covered Oceanwide Plaza Towers in DTLA

The graffiti-covered Oceanwide Plaza towers in downtown Los Angeles — an abandoned high-rise development that has drawn attention for massive tagging and daredevil base jumpers — moved closer to a potential sale Monday after a new buyer emerged in bankruptcy proceedings.

Kali P. Chaudhuri, founder and chairman of The KPC Group, which bills itself as “global enterprise” advancing real estate and health care, is seeking to purchase and finalize the mixed-use project that stalled in 2019 after funding was cut off.

The company’s real estate division, KPC Development Co., is expected to oversee remediation and construction if the deal moves forward. The company owns and develops commercial properties in California and India.

‘Wicked’ star Marissa Bode shatters Hollywood barriers and champions inclusion

In the latest episode of “LA Stories with Giselle Fernandez,” actor and activist Marissa Bode — who plays Nessarose in the “Wicked” film franchise — shares her journey from a small Midwestern town to Hollywood stardom.

Growing up in a place where she was one of the few people of color, Bode found solace in the arts and in online queer communities, helping her accept her identity as both a biracial and queer individual.

Despite a life-changing car accident at age 11 that left her in a wheelchair, Bode never let her disability define her or limit her dreams.
