Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) schools could see the elimination of hundreds of jobs Wednesday—and parents are not happy about it.

OUSD needs to reduce its budget by nearly $103 million for the upcoming year to maintain balance, and the district has stated that layoffs are necessary to achieve this goal.

On Wednesday, the OUSD board is expected to vote on which jobs must go.

There is a proposal that calls for the elimination of 421 positions and the reduction of 144 more.

Out of the 625 jobs on the line, many are in the central office, while others include support staff like school attendance clerks, literacy coaches and community school managers.

The list doesn’t appear to contain teachers, nor are there any proposals to shut down or consolidate schools.

The board must make a decision on job cuts before March 15, which is the last day layoff notices can go out in time for the start of the next school year.
