San Francisco drivers are experiencing major delays on Wednesday because of a massive vehicle fire on the southbound side of Highway 101.

A semitruck became “fully engulfed” in flames near the Third Street off-ramp, Mark Andrews, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol, told SFGATE. According to the CHP incident log, the fire was first reported at 10:46 a.m. Crews on the scene reported difficulties putting the fire out and needed to remove “scrap metal” in order to put out the fire, the incident log shows.

The 18-wheeler truck was loaded with metal in the back, Mariano Elías, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, told SFGATE. The fire was extinguished, and crews are working on removing the debris, Elías said at 12:20 p.m.

As of 11:54 a.m., only the left lane is open on the southbound side of the highway at Silver Avenue, according to a post on X from the CHP. A video posted on X shows heavy clouds of smoke blowing across the highway.

No one was injured in the fire, Elías confirmed. Authorities did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding the fire.
