FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — With over two decades as the president of the Fresno Grizzlies, Derek Franks is announcing he’s stepping down, marking the end of a 22-year run with the organization.

Franks, who began as a ticket office intern in 2004, announced he will be leaving the club.

Over the years, he rose through the ranks and helped guide the Grizzlies through periods of growth, change and national recognition.

Named the 2015 Pacific Coast League Executive of the Year, Franks oversaw more than $15 million in improvements to Chukchansi Park, including the addition of Fresno Social, the Splash Park and a new videoboard.

“The past 22 years have been a dream come true,” Franks said in a statement. “I grew up in this organization, and it shaped far more than my career, it shaped my life.”

Franks said the job connected him to lifelong friendships and even his wife, with his children growing up around the ballpark.

During his tenure, the organization also navigated two ownership transitions, including the start of a new chapter under Diamond Baseball Holdings.

Franks credited the ownership group with strengthening the team’s foundation and providing stability for staff, partners and fans.

Under his leadership, the Grizzlies launched the popular Fresno Tacos alter ego and hosted marquee events like Taco Truck Throwdown and Tequila Fest, helping elevate the team’s presence locally and across Minor League Baseball.

The organization racked up several honors during Franks’ time at the helm, including the 2017 Bob Freitas Award from Baseball America, two Golden Bobblehead Awards and the 2017 Ballpark Digest Promotion of the Year for “Bacon vs. Tacos.”

The team also captured the 2015 Triple-A National Championship and celebrated five World Series titles by its Major League parent affiliates.

“Derek’s impact on the Grizzlies and the Central Valley simply cannot be overstated,” said Pat Battle and Peter Freund, Executive Chairman and CEO of Diamond Baseball Holdings. “We are deeply grateful for his dedication to the Grizzlies and the city of Fresno, and we wish him nothing but the best in his next chapter.”

Franks said he plans to continue his professional career in Fresno and remain active in the community.

He and his family also plan to support the Grizzlies as fans.

The team’s new general manager is expected to be announced next week.
