Portland State continues its golf season next week at the Fresno State Spring Classic. The Vikings will be one of 11 teams taking part in the tournament, played at Fort Washington Country Club.

The Vikings opened their spring earlier this month in Arizona, placing 12th among 15 teams at the Bowling Green Intercollegiate. They will look for improvement over a 928 total in that event. In fact, the Vikings have been much improved this season – four shots better per round than last year (303.9 vs. 307.8). The Vikings’ team scoring average is its best since the 2018-19 season.

Starting for the Vikings at the Fresno State Spring Classic will be seniors Bayler Brundage and Payten Shimizu, junior Cynthia Valerie Ong, sophomore Maddie Dustin and freshman Caithlyn Ong. The elder Ong comes off a team-best performance at the Bowling Green Intercollegiate where she posted 78-74-75=227. She is also the team’s scoring leader for the season at 75.47 strokes per round. Shimizu is at 75.92 strokes per round. Both players are on career-best scoring paces.

Tenth-ranked Pepperdine will be the feature school competing in the event. At 81st, Cal Poly is the only other team ranked in the top 100. Among Big Sky Conference schools, Weber State and Idaho State will also be playing at Fresno.

Portland State’s spring season includes five tournaments. The Big Sky Conference Championship takes place on April 20-22 in Litchfield, AZ.
