OAKLAND (WGME) — The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says a Vassalboro man is facing charges after a chase that ended in Oakland.

Agents say 24-year-old Edwin Lawrence has been under investigation for the past eight months for allegedly trafficking drugs out of his home on Webber Pond Road in Vassalboro.

On Wednesday, police learned that Lawrence was traveling back to Maine, allegedly with drugs in his possession.

Around 8 p.m., Maine State Police pulled Lawrence over on I-295 just north of the West Gardiner tolls.

As troopers approached the vehicle, they say Lawrence took of, leading to a short chase.

Lawrence was arrested after allegedly trying to run away after his vehicle was stopped a second time.

Agents say they found over 2,000 grams of cocaine in the vehicle and a little over $1,000 in drug money.

The cocaine is estimated to be worth about $127,000.

Police say they also executed a search warrant at Lawrence’s home but found nothing.

Lawrence was charged with aggravated trafficking Schedule W drugs, eluding a police officer and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.

He was taken to Kennebec County Correctional Facility, where bail was set at $92,000.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
