The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services is facing a $50 million lawsuit over the death of a 14-month-old girl.

Attorneys for the family of baby Tilly accuse the agency of being reckless, claiming the DCFS placed the toddler in the care of her father, despite his criminal history and known drug problems.

Baby Tilly died last November. Her father and stepmother were charged with murder and torture a month later.

“She was a very happy baby, and bright. Always smiling and laughing,” said Alexis Servin, the child’s mother.

“I trusted that the system responsible for protecting children would do its job. That trust was misplaced,” said Courtney Guerrero, the girl’s grandmother.

The DCFS didn’t share details about the case due to confidentiality.

“As an organization dedicated to the safety of children and well-being of families, we were deeply saddened to learn of the tragedy involving 14-month-old Tilly S. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends,” the agency said in a statement.
