Sam Smith has taken on a covert side project in between sold-out shows at the Castro Theater: an Instagram blog documenting their San Francisco food adventures.
The British singer, who is in town for a 20-show residency at the historic venue that ends March 14, appears to have been posting about their local foodie outings on the account @samserved.
Smith has shared photos from local favorites such as Noe Valley American restaurant Firefly, Molinari Delicatessen in North Beach, Outer Sunset seafood eatery Hook Fish Co. and Castro sushi spot Eiji. In their post about the Eiji, they included a photo of a Chronicle review clipped out of the newspaper and taped to the restaurant’s window.
Most posts are photos with restaurant staff and close ups of dishes, while others feature selfies of Smith snacking or clips of their restaurant experience.
On Thursday, Feb. 26, for instance, they shared a video about their trip to Molinari Delicatessen, dancing through the aisles and trying out the Molinari Special.
“That is love in a sandwich,” Smith said, calling it one of the best they’ve ever tried. “I want to cry.”
A day prior they shared a cheeky clip peeking out from behind a Mission Chinese menu, which was also shared to their verified account’s Instagram Story.
They even shared a screenshot of a Google search about Hot Sauce and Panko to Go in Nob Hill to @samserved on Wednesday, Feb. 25, tagging their hair stylist Sienree with a proposal: “Lets go?!”
The “Stay With Me” musician has also found time to venture outside of the city, with posts about trips to Sam’s Cafe in Tiburon and the French Laundry in Napa.
The account was created in November with a kebab post from Denmark, but has otherwise been devoted entirely to Smith’s Bay Area dining choices this month.
As of Thursday afternoon, @samserved has just over 4,600 followers, compared to the 14.4 million following Smith’s main account @samsmith. While some fans have expressed skepticism about the authenticity of the food account, it is linked in the bio of Smith’s verified account.
There’s also a selfie post with a response to their food-loving fans, who they affectionately call “piggies”: “Anyone wondering it’s genuinely me doing this account. Bringing you sweet food chaos. Lets go.”
Officially halfway through their “To Be Free” residency, Smith has performed 10 shows at the newly-rennovated Castro Theater so far, bringing out surprise guests such as Irish singer Hozier, rising pop star Eli and San Francisco drag queen Nicki Jizz.
One of the most anticipated events of the historic venue’s grand reopening, the run of shows follows a $41 million renovation of the Castro Theatre, which is now managed by Another Planet Entertainment.
