Michigan gas prices dropped 17 cents since last week, making the average $2.92 per regular unleaded gallon, AAA – The Auto Group announced Monday.

The price is 16 cents less than a month ago and 37 cents below the same time in 2024, officials said. It’s also a new low for 2025.

Motorists in the state are paying an average of $43 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline, AAA said.

Meanwhile, average gas prices in Detroit dropped 14 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.90 on Monday, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 1,734 stations.

“Americans appear to be on the cusp of seeing the national average drop below $3 per gallon for the first time in years, as prices have fallen across the vast majority of the country,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a release.

“With well over 40 states seeing gas prices decline and oil plunging below $60 per barrel to end the week, the good news may not end if — and when — the national average hits that magical $2.99 mark. We could even see a handful of stations in places like Oklahoma, Texas, or even Wisconsin drop below $2 per gallon in the weeks ahead — something not seen since the pandemic. In addition, with wages up and gas prices down, Americans are spending the smallest share of their paycheck on gasoline in many years.”

The gas company reported Sunday that the cheapest gas station in Detroit and the lowest price in the state was $2.39. The most expensive price in the city and the highest price in the state was $4.84.

The company said the nation’s price is down 14 cents since last month and stands 14 cents lower than last year, according to data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering some 150,000 gas stations across the country.

AAA reports the country’s pump price is at $3.08.The national average price of diesel dropped 4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.63 per gallon, GasBuddy officials said.

The least expensive gas price averages are in Grand Rapids ($2.89), Flint ($2.84) and Traverse City ($2.89).
