OAKLAND, Maine (WABI) – A Vassalboro man was arrested in Oakland after police said they found several pounds of cocaine in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says a vehicle driven by Edwin Lawrence, 24, was stopped by State Troopers around 8 p.m., Wednesday near the West Gardiner tolls on I-295.
Agents said they believed he was coming back to the state with a large amount of narcotics.
Agents said Lawrence drove off as officers made their way toward the vehicle.
Authorities said they stopped Lawrence again in Oakland using tire deflation devices.
Lawrence ran away but was caught quickly, according to authorities.
When troopers searched his vehicle, they say they found 2,000 grams of cocaine, and more than $1,000 in suspected drug money.
Officials said the value of the cocaine was more than $125,000.
Drug agents then searched Lawrence’s home on Webber Pond but did not find any more evidence.
Lawrence is charged with drug trafficking, eluding an officer, and refusing to submit to arrest.
