GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The Cincinnati Reds outlasted the Padres 11-10 in a slugfest on Thursday at Goodyear Ballpark.

Batter’s box: Third baseman Manny Machado collected the first two hits of the spring, a two-run homer and a grand slam. The blasts, both with exit velocities topping 107 mph, briefly tied the game. Sung-Mun Song also collected his first hit of the spring, a single to left field, while making his first start at second base. Song also walked twice. … Catcher Rodolfo Duran, who is hoping to push Luis Campusano for the second catching job as a non-roster invitee, went 2-for-3 with his first home run of the spring. … Left fielder Nick Solak and catcher Anthony Vilar both hit doubles after entering the game as defensive replacements.

Balls and strikes: Right-hander Nick Pivetta made his first start of the spring, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings. All the runs scored in the second inning after he stranded Elly De La Cruz’s two-out triple in the first inning. … Right-hander David Morgan and left-handers Wady Peralta and Ryan Och each turned in a scoreless inning. … Two prospects added to the roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft both pitched. Right-hander Miguel Mendez allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning and right-hander Garrett Hawkins allowed a run on three hits while striking out two.

Extra bases: ABS challengers were 1-for-5 on Thursday, with two coming in Fernando Tatis Jr.’s third-inning at-bat. Tatis challenged a first-pitch strike at the bottom of the zone only to have it upheld. Later in the at-bat, Reds catcher Will Banfield lost a challenge on a ball call that helped lead to Tatis’ walk, one of two in the game.

On deck: Right-hander Randy Vásquez starts Friday (12:10 p.m.) against the Colorado Rockies in Scottsdale.
