Jaden DeJesus-Eves unexpectedly died in his sleep overnight Tuesday

SACRAMENTO — The Christian Brothers High School community and beyond is mourning the sudden loss of freshman basketball standout Jaden DeJesus-Eves, who died in his sleep late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. Details surrounding the cause of his death have not yet been confirmed.

Standing 6-foot-8, 15-year-old DeJesus-Eves had already emerged as a rising force on the Falcons’ varsity basketball team. As a freshman, he led the team in rebounding and blocked shots, quickly earning recognition across the regional high school basketball community. But those who knew him say his impact stretched well beyond the stat sheet.

Frequently described as a “gentle giant,” DeJesus-Eves was known for his warm spirit, easy smile and playful personality. Teammates and classmates recall a young man who combined an imposing presence on the court with kindness and humility off of it.

“We learned yesterday that our beloved student, Jaden Eves, had passed away. We are heartbroken as we hold Jaden and his family in prayer,” Kristen McCarthy said on behalf of Christian Brothers High School.

The loss has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit campus and the broader Sacramento sports community. Since Wednesday morning, Christian Brothers has had counselors, faculty and staff available on campus to support students and members of the basketball program as they navigate the early stages of grief.

A prayer service was held Thursday morning on campus to honor DeJesus-Eves’ life. Earlier in the week, the Falcons competed in a playoff game just Tuesday night. Coaches and administrators are planning to request a moment of silence before an upcoming tip-off — a tribute to the jersey number he wore.

The California Interscholastic Federation’s Sac-Joaquin Section at Golden 1 Center is expected to coordinate with the school regarding the tribute request.

Support has continued to pour in from rival programs, alumni and families throughout the region as the school community rallies around DeJesus-Eves’ family and one another. For a campus grounded in faith, academics and athletics, the loss of a young life so full of promise is difficult to comprehend.

As students gather in prayer and remembrance, they do so united in honoring a teammate and friend remembered as much for his heart as for his height. This story is developing.
