Gas line rupture forces evacuation of Long Beach business

  • February 27, 2026

LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) – A gas line rupture in downtown Long Beach forced the evacuation of one business Friday afternoon after a contractor struck the line while digging at a nearby construction site.

Fire Chief Griff Skellie told WLOX News Now that a contractor working on a new hotel on Jeff Davis Avenue hit the line while digging with an excavator.

Skellie said the locations of underground utilities at the construction site had been properly marked, but the excavator came too close.

Firefighters checked nearby businesses for a gas smell and determined that only a nearby title company needed to evacuate.
