A teenager and a young man were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a shooting that left a 14-year-old boy riddled with bullets, Long Beach police said Friday.

Officers were dispatched about 12:50 p..m. Sunday to the 5300 block of Elm Avenue, where they found the 14-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

“Officers rendered lifesaving medical aid, including administering chest seals and a tourniquet,” according to an LBPD statement. “The boy was transported to the hospital in critical condition and is now in stable condition.”

Gang detectives responded and determined the victim was walking south on Locust Avenue when he was approached by a male suspect, according to the LBPD.

“The victim attempted to flee, but the suspect pursued him on foot and fired several shots, striking the victim,” police said. “The suspect then approached and pistol-whipped the victim. The suspect fled the scene on foot prior to officers’ arrival.”

Detectives identified the alleged assailant as a 14-year-old Long Beach boy and arrested him in Lakewood on Monday. His name was withheld due to his age.

Also arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting and beating was 19-year-old Long Beach resident Jian Xavier Salas, who was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and being an accessory after the fact.

His bail was set at $75,000, police said.

“No child should ever be subjected to any form of violence, and no one should ever be involved in committing such a brazen and heartless act,” said Long Beach Chief of Police Wally Hebeish. “The attempted murder of a 14-year-old by another 14-year-old is both tragic and disheartening. I am incredibly grateful for the immediate medical aid provided by our responding officers. Their heroic efforts undoubtedly saved this young man’s life.

“Further, through their efforts, detectives arrested two suspects within 24 hours, reinforcing our commitment to stopping all forms of violence in our community,” Hebeish said.

Detectives presented their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Monday for filing consideration.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation and anyone with information was urged to contact gang detectives Fernando Archuleta and Chad Manis at 562-570-7130. Anonymous tips may be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers by calling 800-222-TIPS (8477) or by going to www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
