BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Obscene images and racist language interrupted a California City Council meeting Tuesday night after the meeting’s Zoom feed was hacked.

The city took a 10-minute recess after the “Zoombombing,” which happened at the beginning of the meeting. The graphic images and slurs shown during the disruption were not aired.

California City Mayor Marquette Hawkins called the incident “a very disgusting display of ignorance.”

Hawkins said a hack has happened before during a council meeting.

California City Mayor Marquette Hawkins said the city is investigating what happened and taking steps to prevent it from happening again.

“Ignorance never sleeps. A wise person once told me that. Somebody smarter than me. So we just have to continue to be vigilant and diligent about these kinds of things. We’re taking measures and steps to make sure that people aren’t exposed to disgusting things,” Hawkins said.
