Where Every Pullover Takes Your Breath Away

Ragged Point – Gateway to Big Sur

Where sheer cliffs plunge toward endless Pacific blue—the most dramatic pullover on all of Highway 1 and the northern gateway to SLO CAL’s coast. For safety, stick to designated scenic pullouts only—no stopping on blind curves or shoulders. Miss one? There’s always a spectacular view around the next bend.

Local Tip: Grab coffee at Ragged Point Inn and kick back on the grassy overlook, then hike down to Black Swift Falls for a hidden black sand beach and seasonal 300-foot waterfall.

Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery – San Simeon

One of the best free wildlife shows on the planet—hundreds of massive Elephant Seals, year-round, no ticket required. This is the stop that makes Highway 1 first-timers into life long fans.

Local Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for Hearst’s zebras grazing freely off Highway 1 just north of the castle—descendants of William Randolph Hearst’s original herd!

Moonstone Beach – Cambria

Stroll the bluff boardwalk for crashing surf, driftwood sculptures and smooth moonstones glowing in the sand—an iconic SLO CAL souvenir.

Local Tip: Look for Whale Trail signage along Highway 1, especially during gray whale migration (December–April)—some of the best watching spots on the entire California coast are right here in SLO CAL.

Montaña de Oro State Park – Los Osos

Rugged bluff trails, dramatic tide pools and some of the most pristine coastline in all of SLO CAL—beloved by locals and out-of-town hikers alike. And as a bonus, there is no entry fee for this state park!

Local Tip: Visit at low tide for starfish and anemones; come in spring for wildflower-covered hillsides.

Monarch Butterfly Grove – Pismo Beach

From late October through February, hundreds to thousands of orange-and-black monarchs cluster in the eucalyptus trees—one of the most magical free stops on Highway 1.

Local Tip: In Pismo Beach, watch for surfing goats catching waves with local legend Dana McGregor and his famous goat Goatee. Only in SLO CAL, right?

Spot Sea Otters in the Wild – Morro Bay

From the vibrant Embarcadero, watch playful otters bobbing in the kelp beds near that iconic 576-foot volcanic peak (Morro Rock). Watch them crack open shellfish and roll through the waves. Better yet, charter a boat and join them!

Local Tip: Also keep your eyes peeled for the endangered peregrine falcons that nest at the top of Morro Rock. Morro Bay is a prime birdwatching location.
