Batter’s box: Three of the Padres’ four hits belonged to starters: singles for second baseman Jake Cronenworth and third baseman Sung-Mun Song and a double for Ramón Laureano. Left fielder Samad Taylor came off the bench for the other hit, an RBI single that tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth inning. … Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. played in their final games before leaving for the World Baseball Classic. Tatis went 0-for-2 and played four innings in right field. Machado went 0-for-1 with a sacrifice fly as the DH. … Shortstop Xander Bogaerts went 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts. … First baseman Miguel Andujar went 0-for-3.
Balls and strikes: Right-hander Randy Vásquez averaged 95.6 mph with his fastball in his second Cactus League start. He struck out four and walked two without allowing a hit over 2⅔ innings. He threw 24 of his 37 pitches for strikes and has yet to allow a run through two Cactus League starts. … Right-hander Ron Marinaccio allowed a home run to All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman in 1⅓ innings and right-hander Tristan McKenzie allowed a run in two innings. … Left-hander Jackson Wolf pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
