Batter’s box: Center fielder Jackson Merrill hit his first homer during a two-hit game. Merrill is 3-for-8 with two walks through five games. … Shortstop Xander Bogaerts (Netherlands) went 1-for-3 with a two-run double, his first of the spring, in his final game before departing for the World Baseball Classic. Bogaerts struck out twice. … Second baseman Jake Cronenworth went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. The double was also Cronenworth’s first this spring. … Catcher Freddy Fermin, designated hitter Miguel Andujar and left fielder Nick Solak all went 1-for-3. Solak hit his third double. … Nick Schnell drove in two runs on a pinch-hit homer in the seventh, his second of the spring.

Balls and strikes: Left-hander JP Sears rebounded in his second start, allowing one run on three hits and a walk in three innings. Groundball double plays helped Sears out of the first and third innings. He allowed a homer Luke Raley in the second inning and struck out one. Sears threw 23 of his 34 pitches for strikes. Sears had allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning in his first Cactus League appearance. … Right-handers Mason Miller (USA) and Alek Jacob (Italy) also made their final appearances before leaving for the WBC. Miller topped out at 102.4 mph while striking out two of the three hitters he faced in a scoreless inning. Jacob returned all three hitters he faced. … Right-handers Jeremiah Estrada and Bradgley Rodriguez both struck out two in a scoreless inning. … Right-hander Ty Adcock turned in a scoreless inning. … The bullpen had not allowed a base-runner after Sears’ exit until left-hander Kyle Hart allowed a single to start the ninth. Hart struck out the next batter and then got Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh to ground into a game-ending double play.
