A 2-year-old child was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in San Francisco’s Mission Rock neighborhood Friday night, according to police.

An adult who was with the child while the two were crossing in the area of Fourth and Channel streets was also hit and was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, the San Francisco Police Department said.

Officers found the two victims after responding to the scene just before 9 p.m., police said.  First responders attempted lifesaving efforts on the child, but the victim was declared deceased at the hospital, police said.

The driver who struck the two remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said, adding that drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.

It was not clear by Saturday afternoon whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident. Police declined to provide further comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
