BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The new shopping center project in Shafter, which is expected to get a “major national tenant,” is taking preliminary steps in development.

The Shafter City Council is being asked to approve a tentative tract map which seeks to subdivide the vacant 10.96 acres into 11 lots.

This is the first commercial tract application the city has received in recent years, the agenda read.

The Marketplace Ranch is pursuing this project. It is set to be on the west side of Central Valley Highway between East Euclid Avenue and East Ash Avenue, according to the agenda.

The center is slated to have an anchor grocery store of 27,000 square feet, four in-line retail store fronts, a convenience store with a fuel station, two drive-thru restaurants, an office building and associated parking.

It is also expected to have internal roads, ingress/egress and landscaping to be built in multiple phases, the agenda said.

Fisel “Carlos” Obaid, the applicant for the project and president of The Ranch Marketplace, said the potential national tenant still wishes to remain unnamed as of February.

The Shafter Planning Commission approved the permit for the project’s development in December.

The City Council is set to meet at 6 p.m. March 3 at City Hall at 336 Pacific Ave.
