Something like this was bound to happen, but still, it’s a bit much.
When the Southern California boys basketball regionals open on Tuesday, six San Diego teams will battle it out in the same bracket.
Torrey Pines, seeded 13th in Division 2, will play at No. 4 Olympian, while No. 15 Carlsbad will travel to No. 2 Mission Bay and No. 11 Christian is at No. 6 Cathedral Catholic.
The packed bracket was just one of the storylines accompanying Sunday’s regionals reveal.
Poway, which beat archrival Rancho Bernardo for the school’s first San Diego Section championship since 1992, gets a home game in the Division 3 tournament. The Titans are seeded No. 7 and host No. 10 Los Angeles George Washington.
“This is kind of new to Poway,” said Titans coach Corey Clark. “But I coached with Dante Carey at San Marcos and the playoffs were a regular thing. The bummer was that we’d get to a final or a semifinal in San Diego, lose, then get a bad seed in the regionals — and get beat. You had a great season, but you lost your last two, so the season ended badly.
“We all want high seeds, but we wanted a home game against a team we were competitive with.”
Mira Mesa, the San Diego Section Division 2 champion, drew a No. 9 seed in Division 2 and plays at No. 8 Palisades. Palisades (20-11), Open Division champion in the Los Angeles City Section, is No. 93 in the state. Mira Mesa is 23-9 and No. 45.
“We had no idea what to expect,” said Mira Mesa coach Jon Pierce. “We were hoping for a home game, but we’ll go play.”
Elsewhere in the boys’ bracket:
• Francis Parker is seeded No. 8 and will host No. 9 San Juan Capistrano JSerra in the first round of the Division 1 regionals. That will be the second half of a doubleheader with the Lancers’ girls hosting No. 14 Los Angeles Westchester at 5 p.m.;
• La Costa Canyon is a No. 5 seed in Division 2 and gets a home game;
• And Ramona will play … Ramona. San Diego Section’s Ramona, seeded No. 9 in Division 4, travels to No. 8 Riverside Ramona.

The girls basketball teams at Mission Hills and La Jolla Country Day are seeded No. 10 and 11 in Division 1. Mission Hills travels to JSerra and LJCD heads to Oak Park, which is in the Ventura area.
