LONG BEACH – A man has died and others have been injured in a shooting at a grand opening ceremony in Long Beach on Mar. 1.

Marathon Burger opened its newest location in the 200 block of Pine Ave., where a former Johnny Rockets stood.

The event was attended by the family of Nipsey Hussle, who started the Marathon brand, Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson, rapper Snoop Dogg, whose family invested in the location, and a host of local radio personalities on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony that went off without a hitch.

The jubilant event was marred by a reported shooting around 3:30 p.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Video shows an injured victim being wheeled on a stretcher into an awaiting ambulance. The victim reportedly died from his injuries at a local hospital.

It is not known if the victim attended the event or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Long Beach Police Department personnel were on hand for the event and haven’t reported having a description of the suspect.

There has been no official statement on the matter from Mayor Richardson’s office although he has posted several videos of the ceremony on social media.

The day before the city of Los Angeles celebrated the life of Nipsey Hussle by dedicating the intersection of Crenshaw Blvd. and Slauson Ave. as “Nipsey Hussle Square”.

The midday event had NO publicly reported safety issues.
