One year ago to the day, these two teams left Snapdragon Stadium with nothing settled.
San Diego FC and St. Louis City SC played to a scoreless draw in SDFC’s inaugural home opener — a cautious first chapter between two clubs still defining themselves.
Twelve months later, Anders Dreyer wasted no time tallying the first goal.
Dreyer broke through in the third minute, scoring with his left foot from the center of the box off a nifty pass from Marcus Ingvartsen. Onni Valakari also assisted on the play, and the azul and chrome never looked back, defeating St. Louis 2-0.
The win continues SDFC’s early-season momentum.
Dreyer, last year’s MVP runner-up, was probably feeling a little impatient after nine other players scored across the club’s first two home matches — the Feb. 21 MLS opener against CF Montréal and last month’s Concacaf Champions Cup victory over Liga MX’s Pumas UNAM.
Dreyer did produce two assists against CF Montréal, and added his third assist of the season in the 54th minute after setting up Ingvartsen.
Ingvartsen pushed it past St. Louis goalie Roman Burki with his right foot for his second goal of the season to complete the night’s scoring.
The home opener set expectations. Sunday’s result met them.
With the outcome, SDFC moves to 2-0-0 as it balances league play with its ongoing Concacaf Champions Cup campaign.
St. Louis (0-1-1) was without midfielder Marcel Hartel, who was out as he awaited the birth of his child. Hartel had produced five goals in his last six MLS regular-season appearances dating back to 2025.
St. Louis, under new head coach Yoann Damet, never really threatened with its top playmaker out of the lineup.
At halftime, SDFC led 1-0, with an advantage in possession (55.4%) and shots (5-2). It finished with a 61.1% possession advantage and outshot St. Louis 10-4.
Goalkeeper Duran Ferree made his second career start and produced another clean sheet.
St. Louis’s Burki had four saves.
Sunday marked the third all-time meeting between the clubs. SDFC now holds a 2-0-1 edge in the series.
San Diego FC returns to action on Saturday against Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
The club will also continue its Concacaf Champions Cup campaign in the Round of 16 against back-to-back Liga MX Champion Toluca FC, with the first leg held at Snapdragon Stadium on March 11.
