THIS PROBLEM. MELANIE. GOOD MORNING. WELL, INVESTIGATORS SAY THAT MAIL THEFTS KEEP HAPPENING ACROSS THE COUNTRY, EVEN AT LOCKED CLUSTER MAILBOXES LIKE THIS ONE HERE IN THIS NATOMAS NEIGHBORHOOD. AND THAT’S WHY OFFICIALS FROM OUR AREA ARE COMING TOGETHER. AND THEY’LL BE TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY’RE CRACKING DOWN ON THE PROBLEM. NOW THAT TAX SEASON IS IN FULL SWING, AUTHORITIES SAY THERE’S A HIGHER RISK FOR MAIL THEFT. SO THIS MORNING, SEVERAL AREA LEADERS ARE COMING TOGETHER TO ANNOUNCE THE FORMATION OF A MAIL THEFT TASK FORCE. SACRAMENTO COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY CHAN HOE, REPRESENTATIVE AMI BERA SACRAMENTO CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LISA KAPLAN, AND A U.S. POSTAL SERVICE INSPECTOR, ALONG WITH EVEN THE RANCHO CORDOVA POLICE CHIEF. THEY’LL ALL BE HERE, AND THEY’RE EXPECTED TO TALK ABOUT HOW THIS AREA TASK FORCE WILL COORDINATE INVESTIGATIONS, AND THEY’LL EXPLAIN HOW STATE MAIL THEFT CHARGES CAN NOW BE FILED WITHOUT NEEDING TO MEET THE HIGHER FEDERAL THRESHOLD. AUTHORITIES SAY THAT ALLOWS FOR MORE OPTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO HOLDING OFFENDERS ACCOUNTABLE, OFFICIALS SAY THEY HOPE THAT COMING TOGETHER IN THIS WAY, FORMING THAT TASK FORCE, IT WILL ALL SERVE AS A MAIL THEFT DETERRENT. AND BACK OUT HERE, LIVE HERE. YOU CAN SEE HOW IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD THEY’RE NOT TAKING ANY CHANCES. I SPOKE WITH ONE NEIGHBOR THIS MORNING WHO SAYS THEY’RE MONITORING THIS PARTICULAR MAIL CLUSTER BOX WITH A RING CAMERA BECAUSE THEY HAVE HAD THEFTS HERE BEFORE AND THEY DON’T WANT THIS TO CONTINUE HAPPENING. SO JUST ONE WAY NEIGHBORS ARE COMING TOGETHER TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN.
