A toddler was killed after a car struck three pedestrians, including the child, in Long Beach, police said Monday.

The crash happened at 11:26 a.m. on Maine Avenue near West 5th Street.

The three people were sitting in front of a home on Maine Avenue at the time of the crash, Lt. John Hotchkiss with the Long Beach Police Department said.

Because of the urgent need to treat the toddler, two officers decided to take the child to a hospital in their patrol vehicle before the first responders arrived. While one officer drove, the other provided emergency medical care, according to Lt. Hotchkiss.

Despite the efforts by the officers, the child was declared dead at the hospital

Two other injured people were taken to a separate hospital to be treated for their injures. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The driver stayed with the victims and is cooperating with the investigation, Lt. Hotchkiss said.

This is a developing story.
