Police tape at crime scene

An elementary school in Sacramento was placed on a precautionary lockdown Monday as deputies investigated a report of a man with a gun in front of a nearby home.

The incident began to unfold about 2:20 p.m. when a man was reportedly seen with a gun in a small shopping center in the 8700 block of La Riviera Drive, just east of Watt Avenue, according to archived radio traffic reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.

Witnesses told dispatchers the man with the gun was then seen leaving in a vehicle out of the shopping center parking and heading east on La Riviera. Deputies responded to the area to search for the suspect.

A deputy spotted a man, matching the suspect description, in front of a home in the 2600 block of Waterton Way, across the street from Isador Elementary School. Authorities notified the school, which was placed on a precautionary lockdown.

Deputies detained the suspect, who was “highly intoxicated,” sheriff’s officials said.

Al Goldberg, a spokesperson for the Sacramento City Unified School District, said Isador Elementary was placed on a precautionary lockdown, which had been lifted by 3 p.m. Monday. Goldberg said sheriff’s officials had given an “all clear” announcement before the lockdown was lifted.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Ed Igoe said the incident was initially reported as a man seen with a gun, but deputies did not find the detained suspect with a gun. Igoe said the incident was now being investigated as driving under the influence.

The Bee’s Chris Biderman and Jennah Pendleton contributed to this story.
