Somebody just shelled out $50 million for beachfront property in Del Mar, a San Diego County record for a private home, according to published reports.
It’s hard to call the luxe property a steal, but the price paid on Oct. 22 is a steep discount from what it originally was on the block for: $75 million. That would have worked out to a million dollars per foot of beach frontage, in a property with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

“Designed like a superyacht to withstand the elements without sacrificing style or comfort, this brand-new estate was completed in October 2024,” says, in part, a statement released by the real-estate company Rande Turner Collective.
Those seven bedrooms are divided between the so-called Ocean House’s main building, which has five of them spread out over 4,500 square feet, as well as two guest houses.

“This sale authenticates the deep value for San Diego’s unique coastal real estate while positioning Del Mar’s white sandy beach as the crown jewel,” Rande (pronounced “Randy”) Turner, the listing agent with Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, said after the sale.
Other amenities include a three-car garage (with parking on-site available for 10 vehicles), a “sand room” with beach storage, a saltwater pool and spa with an electric cover, beach access (natch) and a large, dog-friendly outdoor shower.

Architects William Hefner and designer Jeffry Weisman designed the property, which was constructed on what the company said was the “last sandlot” in Del Mar. According to the Wall Street Journal, the property the house was constructed on was purchased by the previous owners in the Bay Area many years ago, who never built on it.
“The seller is a limited liability company tied to Sandra Naftzger, whose family has been major cattle ranchers for over a century in Arizona, California and Oregon,” the journal reported.

The recent purchase of the Ocean House in Del Mar could someday be dwarfed by whoever snaps up the Sandcastle house in La Jolla, a “cliff-side version of Versailles,” which the WSJ reports is available for a cool $108 million. The previous record in San Diego County for a private residence was a $47 million mansion in La Jolla.
