An armed man sought by police was killed and an officer was wounded Monday night in a shootout near a Pasadena Metro station.
The department received a 911 call at 7:30 p.m. Monday regarding a shooting near a Metro station. Officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
The gunman was found near Electronic Drive and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, where he was shot and killed by police. An officer was wounded in the shootout.
The gunman died at the scene. A woman who said she is the grandmother of the man told NBCLA he struggled with mental health and was on medication.
Details about the moments that led up to the shootout were not immediately available.
The officer, identified by authorities as a training officer, was hospitalized. Details about the officer’s condition were not available early Tuesday.
“They went into this knowing what the potential outcome is,” said Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris. “You end with circumstances like this from time to time, but it’s nothing short of heroic when officers come out here at nighttime in the dark and chase people who might otherwise want to harm folks.”
