Montreal-born singer Rufus Wainwright is putting his colorful storybook home in LA’s Laurel Canyon back on the market, Gimme Shelter has learned.
Built in 1926, the 100-year-old Hollywood Hills home will list later this week for $2.3 million, sources said.
The three-bedroom, four-bath home is magical and fit for a creative type, said Douglas Elliman’s Alexandre Anu, who shares the listing with fellow Elliman broker Dag Eliasion.

It’s where Wainwright — known in part for the way he sings the late, fellow Canadian singer Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” — has lived with his husband, art director Jörn Weisbrodt, since 2016, after buying it for $1.45 million, according to records.
Before Wainwright, the home was owned by the late Scott Weiland, frontman for the Stone Temple Pilots.
The house itself “has this really rich rockstar pedigree,” Anu said. “Everything throughout the house has been redone — and yet the original charm and character has been kept intact.”
Two years ago, when the home last listed for $2.2 million, Wainwright posted on Instagram: “I wrote ‘Unfollow The Rules’ here, including one of my favorite pieces, ‘Peaceful Afternoon.’ We have had many of those here, and I hope that the next tenants enjoy it as much as we did.”
But Wainwright wasn’t ready to sell.
“There was a really strong response, with multiple cash offers over the ask. But Rufus decided not to sell. He’s ready now, and it should do really well,” Anu said.
The Tudor-style house “has a ton of charm throughout. It’s got this pitched roof living room with a Batchelder fireplace,” he added.

The fireplace features handmade tiles created by famed Arts and Crafts artisan Ernest Batchelder in the early 1900s. It’s where Wainwright performed his daily “robe recitals” or “quarantunes” — in front of the fireplace, during COVID lockdown — to help keep his fans’ spirits up.
At 2,100 square feet, the home also features multiple balconies. There’s also a chef’s kitchen and a formal dining room.
Design details include wood-beamed cathedral ceilings, stained glass windows, a 1920s fireplace and an octagon-shaped turret library with floor-to-ceiling bookcases that is “a total escape,” Anu said.
Bright colors — blues, yellows and a red ceilinged living room — ignite inspiration and creativity, as light seeps into every room in a different way.
Outside, there are green yards and outdoor dining areas — along with a lovers bridge and a stone koi pond.
The twice-Grammy nominated Wainwright has 11 studio albums, wrote two operas, set Shakespeare’s sonnets to music for the late theater director/playwright Robert Wilson — and has contributed to numerous compilations and film soundtracks.
