Natomas Teachers Association plans to strike on March 10 if no labor agreement is reached. It would be the first strike in district history.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The teachers union from Natomas Unified School District announced a strike date if a labor agreement isn’t reached.

The Natomas Teachers Association announced Tuesday it could begin a strike on March 10, the first in district history, after going through negotiations for over a year.

Natomas Unified would be the second Sacramento-area school district to go on strike. Teachers at Twin Rivers are set to go on strike on Thursday as negotiations are stalled after asking for higher wages and smaller class sizes.

“We are working hard to reach an agreement that makes our students the priority and breaks the cycle of educators having to work two or three jobs just to afford to do the job they love, teaching,” NTA president and Special Education teacher Nico Vaccaro said in a statement. “We are able and willing to bargain for as long as it takes. If NUSD fails to do the right thing, our members are ready to strike and will be on the picket lines beginning on March 10,” said Nico Vaccaro, NTA president and Special Education teacher.”

The teachers union said it bargained with the district on Tuesday and will return to negations Wednesday.

The union added that a non-binding fact-finding report will be issued later this week. Under state law, union members can legally strike 48 hours after the release of the report.

ABC10 has reached out to Natomas Unified School District for comment and has not yet heard back.
