MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Golden Grizzlies traveled for their first of two midweek doubleheaders down south. In a pair of games with the Tigers, the Golden Grizzlies fell by a combined two runs, going 0-2 on the day in a pair of tightly contested games.

GAME 1

The Golden Grizzlies put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell to the University of Memphis 5-4 in game one of their Tuesday Doubleheader against the Tigers.

The Golden Grizzlies came out swinging, with Autumn Liebhauser launching a solo home run to deep left in the first inning, giving Oakland an early 1-0 edge. However, the Tigers quickly countered with two runs, including a triple by Neely Taylor, to end the inning ahead 2-1.

Memphis added to their lead in the second inning, bringing the score to 4-1. Oakland didn’t back down and clawed their way back in the fourth. Kamryn Troyer crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice paired with a throwing error, while Kayla Rodriguez capitalized on a fielding error to close the gap to 4-3.

In the sixth, the Golden Grizzlies leveled the playing field. Kayla Turmell singled up the middle, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and was driven home by a clutch triple from Addison Kopp. The score was tied up at 4-4, setting the stage for a tense finish.

The heartbreaker came in the seventh, when Memphis clinched the win with a walk-off single by Kennedy Semien, sealing a 5-4 victory for the Tigers.

Oakland’s pitchers put in a solid effort. Alyssa Balcom came in for relief duty, tossing 4 1/3 innings and giving up just one earned run on four hits. She threw 85 pitches, 47 of them strikes, and issued two walks while hitting two batters.

GAME 2

The Golden Grizzlies put up a valiant effort in game two as well, but ultimately fell 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel of a game to close out the day.

Oakland started strong in the first inning. Addison Kopp singled, hustled to third on a wild pitch and a walk, setting the stage. Maggie Murphy’s infield single loaded the bases, and Kayla Turmell’s sacrifice fly brought Kopp home. Memphis quickly responded with a solo homer by Ariel Davis, ending the inning in a 1-1 tie.

The third inning saw the Tigers edge ahead. Paris Brienesse singled, advanced on Neely Taylor’s hit, and scored on Faith Brown’s sacrifice fly, giving Memphis a 2-1 lead.

Both teams showcased solid defense, keeping the scoreboard unchanged through the remainder of the game. The Golden Grizzlies had chances, like Storm Kentros’ single in the fourth, but couldn’t capitalize. Addison Caldwell did her part with two hits in three at-bats, while Murphy added another hit, advancing runners in her three plate appearances.

Memphis maintained their advantage, sealing the 2-1 victory.

Kenna Bommarito pitched a complete game for Oakland, delivering 6 innings of work. She allowed 7 hits and 2 earned runs, facing 25 batters with one strikeout and one walk. She threw 77 pitches, 52 of them strikes, inducing 13 flyouts and 3 groundouts, showing command even after surrendering a home run.
