FRESNO, Calif. — The Idaho men’s golf team closed with its best round of the tournament but finished 10th at The Watney on Tuesday at San Joaquin Country Club.
 
The Vandals posted a 6-over-par 290 in the final round to cap a three-day total of 883 (297-296-290) in the 14-team field. Nevada won the team title at 852, followed by Pacific (859) and UC San Diego (862).
 
Sam Johnson led Idaho, who tied for 22nd at six-over 219. Johnson opened with rounds of 73 and 75 before closing with an even-par 71, the team’s low score of the final round.
 
Josh McCartain finished tied for 31st at 7-over 220 (73-73-74), while Dalton Dean tied for 33rd at 8-over 221 after rounds of 75, 72 and 74.
 
Henrik Koglin carded a final-round 71 to climb into a tie for 40th at 10-over 223 (76-76-71). Joe Sykes rounded out the lineup in a tie for 74th at 24-over 237 (83-76-78).
 
Competing as an individual, Carter Frisby tied for 70th at 22-over 235 (79-78-78).
 
Idaho improved each round of the tournament, shaving seven strokes off its opening-round score by Tuesday’s finish.
 
The Vandals are right back into action on Sunday as they host the 17th Bandon Dunes Championship on Pacific Dunes, the second ranked public course in the US, on the idyllic Oregon coast. They will look to return to the form that saw them win two tournaments in the fall against a talented and diverse national field.
