1. Minimum wage ordinance impacting LA hotels, industry report says
A new survey of 92 hotels showed that 6% of jobs were eliminated after a minimum wage ordinance went into effect for tourism workers in the city, Hotel Association of Los Angeles officials said.
The survey of 92 hotel owners — conducted by the Hospitality Education and Research Organization, a project of the association — found hotels lost 6% of jobs after the minimum wage ordinance went into effect in September 2025.
Of the 92 respondents, about 76 reported employment impacts. About 62% of surveyed hotels said they plan to reduce staff hours in 2026.
Additionally, the report found that LA hotels entered 2026 with weak demand growth, limited pricing power and rising financial stress.
2. LA County increases funding for organization that helps youth through wolf therapy
When she was 17 years old, Fairuz Azra was looking for connection as a high school student, and she found it in an unlikely place.
Azra went to Wolf Connection, a nonprofit based in Palmdale that connects people with wolfdogs.
“Relationships and friendships, I think that’s something that I was missing,” she said. “Finding a sense of community, and that longing is what kept me coming back.”
Azra is 20 years old now and enjoyed Wolf Connection so much that she’s working as a mentorship leader and junior volunteer with the organization.

3. Fearing GOP upset, top California Democrat urges lagging candidates for governor to drop out of race
California’s top Democrat has a message for his party’s candidates who are lagging in the race for governor: If you can’t win, get out of the race.
State party Chair Rusty Hicks is fearful that a large Democratic field seeking to replace outgoing Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom will dilute the party’s vote in the June primary.
That could let only two Republicans advance to the November election. A GOP victory for the state’s highest office would be a seismic shock in the nation’s most populous state, where a Republican hasn’t won a statewide election in two decades.

Rep. Laura Friedman on the state of the entertainment industry and the Iran conflict
At the 2026 Art Directors Guild Awards, California Rep. Laura Friedman was presented with the ADG President’s Award for her advocacy of state and federal tax incentives that aim to support union jobs in the entertainment industry.
Friedman said that because there is production in other states as well, there are other members of Congress, including Republicans, who are seeing the importance of a national cash credit.
“We want to tell our own stories,” she said. “We know we have the best crews in the entire world, and as long as we have a level playing field, we will have production in the United States and here in Los Angeles where we have incredible infrastructure. Having this tax credit is really the missing link.”
