Trent McDuffie is headed to Hollywood.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded their star cornerback to the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Los Angeles is sending back a package of valuable draft picks — No. 29 overall, a fifth-rounder and sixth-rounder this year, plus a 2027 third-rounder. The Rams still have another first-round pick this year at No. 13 from their trade with the Atlanta Falcons last year.

McDuffie, 25, played four seasons for the Chiefs after being selected 21st overall in 2022. He was named First Team All-Pro in 2023 and Second Team All-Pro in 2024. Kansas City won the Super Bowl in his first two seasons before losing the big game in his third and missing the playoffs last year.

He’s entering the final year of his rookie deal, and Schefter added that McDuffie “would be expected to sign a long-term deal with the Rams.”

This move signals the start of another new era for the Chiefs, who went 6-11 and lost Patrick Mahomes to a torn ACL late in the season. Previously, they traded star wide receiver Tyreek Hill for a coup of picks and used them to reload their defense.

Now armed with two first-rounders this April, they’ll aim to do that again. Free agency won’t be much of an option given their limited cap space, and nobody knows how soon Mahomes will return. Moving McDuffie before giving him a contract extension shows the cap constraints that general manager Brett Veach is dealing with.

Kansas City’s quarterback suffered a torn ACL on Sunday as the Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention.

As for the Rams, trading first-round picks isn’t surprising under general manager Les Snead. The team has recently moved these premium picks for Jared Goff (2017), Brandin Cooks (2018), Jalen Ramsey (2020 and 2021) and Matthew Stafford (2022 and 2023). Los Angeles didn’t have a first-round pick from 2017 to 2023 before finally selecting Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse at No. 19 in 2024.

The Rams are coming off a loss in the NFC Championship Game, and the expectation is that McDuffie can put them over the top. Reigning MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford just turned 38, so this type of win-now move is justified.
