OAKLAND — A man crouching on an East Oakland street died Tuesday night after he was struck by a car, authorities said.
The name of the man has not yet been released. He is believed to be 46-years-old and unhoused, authorities said.
The fatal incident happened about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 7100 block of San Leandro Street.
Police said the man had been standing in the roadway and that several cars had been able to avoid him. But for some reason he began crouching down in a westbound lane and was struck by a Toyota Corolla, driven by a 17-year-old Oakland boy, police said. The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Why the man was in the roadway is under investigation.
The teen driver remained at the scene and provided a statement to traffic investigators, police said.
