California has awarded the City of Fresno $10.5 million to support homeless services at the city’s shelters.

The money comes from the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention fund.

The big picture: Funding, which comes in just shy of $10.5 million, will support more than 500 emergency shelter beds throughout the city, as well as case management support for the homeless who are living in the shelters.

The shelters being supported by the grant include the Ambassador Inn, Victory Village, Travel Inn, Villa Motel and Fresno Home.

What they’re saying: Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said the city has provided shelter to more than 11,000 people since he entered office in 2021. More than half of those people have since exited homelessness, Dyer said.

“These funds from the state are absolutely critical in our work to address the complex challenges of homelessness,” Dyer said. “Having the Governor’s and Legislature’s ongoing support in this work is invaluable.”
