A violent crime at Downtown Commons, or DoCo, has drawn greater attention to the dining, shopping and entertainment complex.

A man and woman were stabbed Monday night in Downtown Commons, police told The Sacramento Bee. The stabbing was reported about 9:45 p.m. in the 400 block of K Street.

The two were taken to a hospital, where the man, identified by his family as Dustin DeWitt, 21, of Stockton, died. The woman’s medical condition has not been released.

Police are continuing to investigate.

Here’s what to know about Downtown Commons:

What is DoCo?

Downtown Commons, or DoCo, is “a place for community, bringing people together to experience a mix of food and shopping, sports and entertainment, hospitality, and public art, conveniently located in the heart of downtown Sacramento,” the complex said.

It is located adjacent to Golden 1 Center on David J. Stern Walk, an extension of K Street, in downtown Sacramento.

The complex is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, although individual business hours may differ, the complex said.

What is the history of DoCo?

The complex was formerly part of the Downtown Plaza mall, once home to a Macy’s and other businesses, including nightclubs and shops, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Plagued by vacancies and other problems, the mall closed in 2014 to make way for construction of Golden 1 Center and a nearby hotel.

The remainder reopened as Downtown Commons, or DoCo, in 2015. The Macy’s store closed in 2025.
