FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Warmer temperatures across the Central Valley are drawing people outside, but those with seasonal allergies may be feeling a sneeze coming on.

“You have rain, warmer temperatures and now we have the wind, so it forms a perfect picture where the pollen is more aggressive,” Fresno-based allergist and immunologist Dr. Praveen Buddiga explained.

Dr. Buddiga says pollen is mostly from trees, and his patients have been feeling an itch.

“Over the past week, it’s been really busy. A lot of watery eyes, sneezing, itchy throat, scratchy throat,” he stated.

Dr. Buddiga says those symptoms could last longer than usual.

“We should probably expect about 20 days extra, so that would be toward the end of May,” he said.

He suggests those who deal with seasonal allergies act now with steroid nasal sprays, over-the-counter non-drowsy antihistamines and more.

“They can close the windows so the pollen doesn’t come into the home. They can turn their air filters on with the HEPA filter,” Dr. Buddiga stated.

There’s also the option of an allergy shot that patients can get through their allergist, which helps ease symptoms.
