SACRAMENTO, Calif. – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond congratulated 31 schools across California nominated as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2025.
Despite the United States Department of Education’s decision to end the program, these schools are being honored as 2025 California Blue Ribbon Schools.
The award recognizes schools that excel in closing achievement gaps and demonstrate high academic success.
“It’s my pleasure to congratulate these school communities on their hard work to earn recognition as 2025 California Blue Ribbon Schools,” Thurmond said. “While the U.S. Department of Education has abruptly ended the NBRS program, I want to ensure that the hard work of students, staff, and educators does not go unrecognized,” said Thurmond.
Schools earn this recognition based on academic performance or progress in closing opportunity gaps. Blue Ribbon schools are among the highest performing in the state, considering scores and graduation rates.
The recognized schools will receive official recognition from the California Department of Education and will be celebrated at the California School Recognition Program in spring 2026.
The recognition program is established for this year only, but other programs like California Distinguished Schools will continue to honor exemplary schools statewide.
