Mark your calendars.
On March 12, Oakland will host a public celebration for hometown hero and Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu.
A celebration rally, which is free and open to the public, will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Frank Ogawa Plaza outside Oakland City Hall. A pre-rally news conference will be held at 11 a.m. inside City Hall.
“Alysa Liu is Oakland – her drive, her brilliance, her joy,” Mayor Barbara Lee said in a statement Thursday. “Watching her claim gold for our city and our country filled every Oaklander with pride, and we are overjoyed to welcome her home. This rally is a celebration not just of an extraordinary champion, but of everything our community represents: grit, excellence, and the belief that Oakland always punches above its weight. Come out and celebrate one of our own.”
Liu captured two gold medals at the recent Milan Cortina Olympics – one in the women’s singles figure skating event and the other in the mixed team figure skating event.
