The City of Coronado is dedicating a new commemorative bench adjacent to the League of Wives Memorial in Coronado. The bench honors the enduring contributions, courage, and unity of the “Coronado” wives whose advocacy and support were instrumental in the formation and impact of the League of Wives.

The wives being honored include Sybil Stockdale, Sherry Martin, Shirley Stark, Chloe Moore, Marjorie Jenkins, and Mary Ann “Pat” Mearns, as well as all Coronadans whose loved ones were Missing in Action (MIA) or Prisoners of War (POWs) during the Vietnam War. Their determination and resolve helped launch what became a powerful national movement.

While the League of Wives grew to represent families across the country during the Vietnam War, its roots were firmly planted here in Coronado. It was in this community that the original gathering of military spouses organized, found their collective voice, and began advocating for accountability, communication, and the humane treatment of American prisoners of war. From this small but steadfast group of Coronado women emerged an effort that ultimately shaped national policy and brought international attention to the plight of POWs and their families.

The dedication ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in Star Park from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event is open to the public, and all community members are warmly invited to attend as we recognize and celebrate this important chapter of Coronado’s history.

The City looks forward to welcoming residents, veterans, families, and all who wish to pay tribute to these remarkable women and their legacy.
