A woman in her 30s was shot Thursday inside a healthcare clinic in Fresno, sending dozens of patients and staff scrambling for safety before police arrived.

A man suspected in the shooting was arrested within minutes of officers arriving to Family HealthCare Network at Clinton and West avenues, Fresno Police Lt. Larry Bowlan said.

The shooting was reported at 8:21 a.m. and police got there about 2 1/2 minutes later.

The suspect, whose in his 60s, had been in the back portion of the clinic, possibly waiting to be seen as a patient, before he allegedly shot a healthcare worker inside a room.

“The healthcare worker exited the room and collapsed in a back hallway,” Bowlan said.

Bowlan said it was not yet known how many rounds were fired but it was more than two.

The suspect then walked back toward the front of the clinic but left the firearm behind in the rear area of the building, police said.

Officers later recovered the gun, Bowlan said.

Officers searched the building after the arrest and found the victim on the floor in the hallway suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Officers began rendering aid until emergency crews arrived. She was taken to a Fresno hospital and was in critical but stable condition.

Bowlan said between three dozen and four dozen people — including patients and staff — were inside the clinic at the time of the shooting.

Witnesses reported seeing multiple people running from the clinic after the shots were fired. Police said no one else was injured.

Authorities believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that the victim was likely the intended target.

“At this point, we feel this was a targeted incident involving a patient-healthcare worker type relationship,” Bowlan said. “We don’t know yet if there was another personal relationship there.”

Police said the suspect in custody is expected to face multiple felony charges. His identity and the victim’s name have not yet been released as detectives continue interviewing witnesses.

Anyone who was at or near the clinic can call police at 559-621-7000. The investigation remains ongoing.
