A suspected DUI driver was arrested after a violent single-vehicle crash that split her car into two pieces and severely injured a passenger in the vehicle, officials with the San Jose California Highway Patrol announced.

In a news release, CHP officials said officers responded to reports of the Feb. 28 crash on Interstate 280 south of Winchester around 8 p.m.

Arriving officers quickly determined that the female driver, believed to be under the influence, crashed into a tree with such force that it split the 2012 Ford Fusion into two separate chunks.

Investigators said the passenger was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. No information was provided on the age and gender of the victim, nor was the person’s condition immediately available.

In photos of the crash aftermath posted to social media by CHP, the back and front halves of the car came apart in what appears to be an L-shape, with the front of the vehicle at an almost 90-degree angle from its rear.

It’s unclear just how fast the woman was traveling at the time of the incident, but in an interview with SFGATE, CHP Officer Ross Lee said speed may have been a factor in the crash.

“Crashes like this occur far too often and are 100% preventable. We remind everyone, if you are going to drink, make a plan,” CHP’s release noted. “Designate a sober driver or use other transportation options. Make safety your priority behind the wheel.”
