Two men were arrested and two San Francisco police officers were injured Thursday after an altercation with Mayor Daniel Lurie‘s security detail near the Tenderloin.

Lurie was unharmed in what the head of San Francisco’s police union described as a “violent incident.” Mission Local reported that one of the mayor’s bodyguards was “left bleeding from the back of his head” after the incident, which the news outlet said happened after a group of people blocked the black SUV that Lurie uses regularly.

The San Francisco Police Department said in a statement that the incident occurred near Cedar and Polk streets at about 5:38 p.m., when officers responded to a request for backup from two other officers who were assigned to Lurie’s security detail. Police said Lurie’s bodyguards had gotten into “a physical altercation” with two unidentified men.

Police descended on the area and arrested the two men. Two officers were treated at the scene for injuries that were not life threatening, according to SFPD. No one else was injured.

The identities of the alleged assailants were not available pending formal charges.

Lurie’s office did not immediately return a request for comment. But Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, confirmed that one of his union’s members was hurt during the incident.

“We are grateful that the officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail acted swiftly and courageously to protect him in a dangerous and unpredictable situation,” Wong said in the statement.

SFPD responded quickly to the scene to assist and take control of the situation, Wong said.
