Couple arrested on Kauai after allegedly shooting at California officer

  • March 6, 2026

LIHUE (HawaiiNewsNow) – A couple wanted in a shooting involving a California law enforcement officer was arrested Tuesday on Kauai.

Shane Mahoney, 39, and Arianna Mitchell, 22, are accused in connection with a shooting that struck a California deputy sheriff’s marked vehicle while the officer was inside.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna addressed the arrests at a press conference Thursday. “This was not a random act,” said Luna. “It’s unacceptable. It’s actually sickening if you ask me.”

Shooting in Rolling Hills Estates

The incident occurred on Sunday, Feb. 22, at about 9 a.m. in Rolling Hills Estates.

The deputy sheriff was working overtime and patrolling around the Lomita Sheriff’s Station, said officials.

After responding to a call about a reckless driver in the area, the deputy sheriff was in the driver’s seat of his vehicle and about to leave.

A gunshot struck the passenger side trunk compartment before hitting the rear seat panel, said Luna.

The deputy got out of his car and found a single bullet hole. He was not injured, said officials.

Detectives found that a day after the shooting, Mahoney and Mitchell left their home, drove to the Los Angeles International Airport, and flew to Kauai, said Luna.

Nathan Hochman, Los Angeles County district attorney, also spoke at the press conference about the investigation.

“Each one of these individuals thought that they could run,” said Hochman. “The long arm of the law is long. This is a very small world.”

Evidence was collected, including surveillance video, an assault rifle, three semi-automatic firearms, and ballistic evidence, said Luna.

Mahoney was accused of firing a rifle from a balcony at an apartment complex, and Mitchell allegedly helped him escape law enforcement. A warrant for their arrests was issued.

Arrests made on Kauai

On Tuesday, March 3, at about 7:20 p.m. at Poʻipū Beach, Mahoney and Mitchell were arrested after a brief foot pursuit, said investigators.

Mahoney was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault with a firearm upon a peace officer. Mitchell was charged with accessory after the fact.

Luna said that he was grateful the deputy was safe. He also warned that offenders who shoot at law enforcement officers will be held accountable.

“If you attempt to harm one of our deputies, you will be pursued relentlessly across city lines, across state lines, or wherever in this world we need to find you,” said Luna.

Mahoney and Mitchell are awaiting extradition back to California, said officials.
