A driver was taken into custody Thursday morning after a pursuit that began in Rancho Cordova and stretched more than 80 miles to the South Lake Tahoe area, authorities said.
Rancho Cordova police attempted a traffic stop around 4 a.m. at Folsom Boulevard and Florin Perkins Road, according to Sgt. Ed Igoe, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, which contracts for services in the city.
The driver failed to stop and deputies initiated a pursuit, he said.
The chase eventually moved onto eastbound Highway 50 toward the Sierra. When the vehicle crossed into El Dorado County, the California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit, Igoe said.
CHP officers followed the vehicle over Echo Summit before the driver stopped on Highway 50 and South Upper Truckee Road just west of Meyers.
CHP Officer Ruth Loehr, a spokesperson for the CHP’s South Lake Tahoe office, said the suspect — who was driving a white sedan — was taken into custody around 8:45 a.m.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department assisted in the response, she said.
A portion of Highway 50 near Meyers was closed Thursday morning while multiple agencies responded to the scene. Cars for a time were being turned around on Highway 50 at Meyers to avoid the road closure, which has since been lifted.
