Bakersfield has made an inside hire for its next police chief.

The city announced Friday that assistant chief Brent Stratton will take over as Bakersfield’s new Chief of Police.

Driving the news: The city chose Stratton to be its next chief after he was a finalist alongside fellow assistant chief Jeremy Blakemore.

Chief Greg Terry previously announced that he will retire in April.

Stratton has managed the Field Services Division and Special Operations Division during his time as assistant chief.

He ascends to the top of the department 22 years after first being hired, working his way through various positions, including detective, sergeant, lieutenant and captain.

Stratton also has a dozen years of experience on the SWAT team.

What we’re watching: The city announced that Stratton will start his new position on May 1.

Lawmakers react: Rep. Vince Fong (R–Bakersfield) and State Sen. Shannon Grove (R–Bakersfield) congratulated Stratton for being named chief.

“Congratulations to my friend Brent Stratton on being named the next Chief of the Bakersfield Police Department,” Fong wrote on Facebook. “Brent has dedicated his career to protecting our community with integrity, professionalism, and a deep commitment to public safety. I look forward to our continued partnership!”

“Congratulations to my friend Brent Stratton on being named Bakersfield’s new Police Chief,” Grove wrote on Facebook. “Brent has dedicated his career to serving and protecting our community, and I know he will lead the department with integrity and commitment. Bakersfield is in great hands. Wishing you all the best in this new role!”
