A three-alarm fire that started late Wednesday on the ballroom rooftop of a Mission Valley hotel caused about $1 million in damage, primarily to the outside of the building, a San Diego fire spokesperson said Thursday.

The fire was reported shortly before midnight at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jose Ysea. The hotel is on Rio San Diego Drive near Qualcomm Way.

Ysea said firefighters arrived to find the flames moving up the side of the attached hotel tower, reaching as high as the sixth floor. It took about half an hour to extinguish them, stopping the spread into the hotel’s rooms. Several guests left their rooms during the fire response.

“Crews did an excellent job of containing the fire to the exterior of the building,” Ysea said. “There was little to no interior fire damage.”

Ysea said the fire caused an estimated $800,000 damage to the building and another $200,000 to its contents.
