Cement truck drivers for CalPortland Ready-mix Fresno facility voted to end their union representation last month.

The Ready-mix drivers voted to end their union representation, concluding a month-long effort to remove Teamsters Local 431 from their workplace.

In a vote held on Jan. 29, workers voted 9-7 to decertify the union that had represented them for more than two decades, according to results from the National Labor Relations Board.

The decertification petition was filed in October 2025 by Ready-mix driver Darrell Dunlap Sr., who received legal assistance from the National Right to Work Foundation.

The vote was initially delayed when Teamsters Local 431 filed blocking charges alleging employer misconduct, but the union dropped those charges in early January and the election was held.

“This workplace has been under Teamster union control for over 20 years, so we’ve seen union officials’ actions up close for many years,” Dunlap said in an earlier statement. “As our majority-backed petition shows, based on our extensive experience with the Teamsters, we are confident we’ll be better off without a union.”

The NLRB moved to block the votes pursuant to policy that permits union official to delay the decertification process by filing unproven or unrelated “unfair labor practice” charges .

Jacob Comello, National Right to Work Foundation media coordinator, said the process could use some reform.

“This shows the unfairness of the ‘blocking charge’ policy, as in this case the workers had to wait for the union to drop its own charges just so they could have a chance to exercise their right to vote on the union,” he said.

Sixteen of the 17 eligible workers cast ballots in the election at the facility at 410 N. Thorne Avenue.
